Best Memoir: Witness by Curtis Smith. Honorable mention: Caged by Cameron Conaway, reviewed here. Stephen Batchelor's Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist came out in 2010. As I post this I should note that Stephen's own latest work, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist, is the subject of a review posted yesterday by James Ishmael Ford at his blog Monkey Mind. Stephen Batchelor, a former Zen monk, has written a number of great books, including Buddhism Without Beliefs, Living with the Devil, and Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist. I didn't order it in advance of publication, but did acquire it soon after. Best Buddhist Book: Confession of a Buddhist Atheist by Stephen Batchelor. Known for his agnostic and secular approach to the Buddhadharma, he has written several books, including the bestselling Buddhism Without Beliefs. I, too, do not believe in reincarnation. Stephen Batchelor wrote “Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist” in which he says, frankly, he's dumped a good bit of Buddhist doctrine, too, including rebirth/reincarnation. It went right on top of my pile of bedside books.
